We can't Eradicate Corruption - Fanteakwa DCD

The District Coordinating Director of Fanteakwa in the Eastern Region, Gilbert Avemegah has lamented that corruption has been with us for a very long time in the country that it can't be erased from the system.

According to him, it will be hardly to eradicate corruption from the district and nationwide but can be drastically reduced if citizens increase their perception to fight it.

He said this today (June 8, 2017) in a workshop organized by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) in Begoro, sensitizing on corruption activities in the fanteakwa district for the police service, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Education Service (G.E.S), Politicians, National Commission (NCCE) for Civic Education and the Social Auditing Club (SAC) members in the district.

According to a survey report conducted by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) on citizens' knowledge, perceptions and experiences of corruption in the Fanteakwa District, the most corrupt institution in the district is the  Revenue Authority as compare to the police service, Utility Service Providers and the others.

The report says "close to 2% of sampled respondents had contact with the Ghana Revenue Authority, yet almost every fourth person to visit that institution paid bribes.

 This is followed by the police where close to 21% of respondents had contact and every three out of 10 to interact with them had to pay a bribe. The least institutions where bribes were paid were NGOs and the media".

According to the report, Most citizens in the Fanteakwa District paid bribes to either speed things up; to avoid a problem with the authorities or to receive a service they were entitled meanwhile they are willing and ready to tackle corruption.

Most of them agreed to report incidences of corruption, get involved in fighting corruption and report friends and colleagues who fought against corruption.

 They also believed that ordinary people could make a difference in the fight against corruption.
